Tromsø

Norway

Seeing the northern lights, or the aurora borealis, as they are also known, is a jaw-dropping and mystical moment. Perhaps here given the remoteness you will see them clearly (I didn't have much luck in Reykjavík). The lights are at their most frequent in late autumn and winter/early spring.

Tromsø

Tromsø is a city in the very northernmost part of Norway. It is almost 350 km north of the Arctic Circle and is one of the best places to view the spectacular Northern Lights in winter.

Being the largest city in Northern Norway, Tromsø is a cultural centre for its region. It gained some international attention when on 11 June 2005 hosted one of six 46664 concerts, designed to put work concerning HIV/AIDS on the international agenda.

Tromsø is the eighth-largest municipality in Norway with a population of 71,590, and the centre of the ninth-largest urban area, with a population of about 65,000. The city is home to the world's northernmost university and also houses the northernmost botanical garden and planetarium.
