Singapore

Singapore is Linzy's home and at the current time, we're visiting this city every year! It's a misunderstood city, often because of brief encounters for logistic reasons on route to places like Australia, however the food is incredible (and cheap if you look in the right place!) and nature exists in Jon's favorite place Pulau Ubin. It has it all and is the perfect introduction to Asia for the westerner.

Singapore

Singapore is a city-state in Southeast Asia. Singapore was founded as a British trading colony in 1819, and since independence, it has become one of the world's most prosperous countries and boasts one of the world's busiest ports. Singaporean food is legendary, with bustling hawker centres and 24-hour coffee shops offering affordable food from all parts of Asia. Combining the skyscrapers and subways of a modern, affluent city with a medley of Chinese, Malay and Indian influences and a tropical climate, with tasty food, good shopping and a vibrant nightlife scene, this Garden City makes a great stopover or springboard into the region.

Despite its small size, Singapore has a diversity of languages, religions, and cultures. Former Prime Ministers of Singapore, Lee Kuan Yew and Goh Chok Tong, have stated that Singapore does not fit the traditional description of a nation, calling it a society-in-transition, pointing out the fact that Singaporeans do not all speak the same language, share the same religion, or have the same customs.

Tourism in Singapore is a major industry and contributor to the Singaporean economy, attracting 18.5 million international tourists in 2018, more than 3 times of Singapore's total population. Singapore is the 5th most visited city in the world, and 2nd in the Asia-Pacific.

No uncle(s), no owls in Singapore

“Uncle” is an affectionate term we use in Singapore to address a male adult in his forties to seventies, even though we might not be family. Uncle Bangpao is my father's friend of more than thirty years. He lives around the eastern side of Singapore and does his morning walks at Pasir Ris Park. He

The (little known) wildlife of Singapore – Part [II]

Before setting up birdfeeders on our roof and learning about backyard birds, I would have identified most of them as “little birds”. But today, there are so many feathered friends that I can recognise in San Francisco. Heading back to Singapore with the insightful iNaturalist mobile app marks a new chapter in my life. In

The (little known) wildlife of Singapore – Part [I]

When I was seven, my family moved from downtown Singapore up north. Back in those days, Yishun was not just the countryside, but a jungle of sorts. My father wanted his children to grow up with nature and wildlife. My brother and I grew up spotting monitor lizards cross the roads and once brought an
