Chinguetti Mosque

Built in the thirteenth or fourteenth century, this mosque includes what is believed to be the second oldest continuously used minaret in all of the Muslim world. The mosque consciously lacks extensive adornment, in line with Maliki school of Islam. It's considered the national emblem of Mauritania. Non-Muslims are not allowed to enter the mosque but may view the exterior.

Chinguetti

Chinguetti is a city in Saharan Mauritania. It contains a noted Islamic scholarly centre sometimes called the library in the desert and is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Occupied for thousands of years, the Chinguetti region was once a broad savannah. Cave paintings in the nearby Amoghar Pass feature images of giraffes, cows, and people in a green landscape. It is quite different from the sand dunes of the desert found in the region today.
