Spetses

The island of Spetses administratively belongs to the Prefecture of Attica, although its proximity to the Peloponnese mainland puts it geographically in Argolis. It is extremely popular with Athenians, who swarm the place during Easter and summer weekends. Due to the nature of available accommodation, package tourism has not caught on much. In the past Spetses has had a reputation as a quiet island, but more recently there have been complaints from both residents and return visitors that the noise level from cars and motorbikes has been reaching the level of cacaphony of other, more touristed islands.

Someday we will visit Alonissos or begin to dream about going there! However, for now its not on our radar. Let us know in the comments if you think that should change!

Alonissos

Alonnisos or Alonissos is the least touristed island in the Sporades Islands. It is 3 km (2 nm) E of the island of Skopelos. Alonissos is also the name of a village on the island. The Municipality of Alonissos includes several other islands.

The island at its widest is 4.5 kilometres (3 miles) from northwest to southeast and at its longest is 20 kilometres (12 miles) from southwest to northeast. The area of the island is 64 km. The island is mostly limestone. It is located east of mainland Greece and Magnesia, northeast of Euboea and northwest of the island of Skyros.

In the Middle Ages and until the 19th century, the island was known as Liadromia (Λιαδρόμια). It was renamed in 1838, as it was – mistakenly according to later research – identified with Halonnesus of Antiquity. In reality, the present island of Alonnisos was known as Icus or Ikos (Ancient Greek: Ἴκος) to the Ancient Greeks. Under that name, it is mentioned as having been colonised by Cnossians. The fleet of Attalus and the Rhodians sailed past Scyrus to Icus. Phanodemus wrote an account of the island.
